The Kickoff Presentation: Strategies to Engage Students During the Unit Kickoff Presentation

Updated: Apr 13, 2021

As an instructor in the exploratory, fundamental, advanced or adult learner SkillsUSA Career Essentials: Experiences course, you lead a kickoff presentation with your students to begin each unit. There are two resources available for completing the unit kickoff - a PowerPoint presentation that you can lead in-class or via Zoom or a pre-recorded kickoff video for you to play or for students to view on their own. Both files are available to you in the Resources tab of each unit in your Instructor Version of your course. The pre-recorded video is also available in students’ Resources tab.

Actionable Strategies for Leading the Kickoff Presentation…

Remotely/Synchronously: Meet with your learners on a video conference and share your screen to lead your learners in a group presentation either using the pre-recorded video or PowerPoint. (Pause at strategic moments for group discussion!)

Remotely/Asynchronously: Instruct your learners to view the pre-recorded video available in the Resources tab of their course. Learners review at their own pace or by a specified due-date.

On-site/Synchronously: Present the Unit Kickoff Presentation in-class and facilitate the discussion provided in the lesson plan or play the pre-recorded video.

On-site/Asynchronously: Ask students to review to Unit Kickoff pre-recorded video (in the Resources tab of students’ course) before beginning each unit or, show the video on a scheduled day in class to formally begin each unit and allow students to complete the unit at their own pace (but by a specified due date).
